The Story Behind the Name

John Henry "Doc" Holliday (1851–1887) was a dentist, gambler, and gunfighter of the American frontier. After being diagnosed with tuberculosis, he left his dental practice in the East and headed west for his health. He became one of the most legendary figures of the Old West, best known for his close friendship with Wyatt Earp and his role in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral on October 26, 1881. Doc was known as a deadly shot and a sharp wit — his famous last words, looking at his bare feet, were "This is funny."
